Political Storm Over Uttarakhand Minister’s Husband Remark
The Uttarakhand minister’s husband remark by Girdhari Lal Sahu, husband of women and child welfare minister Rekha Arya, has triggered a nationwide political storm. Sahu allegedly suggested that girls from Bihar could be “brought for marriage” for ₹20,000–25,000. A video circulated on social media showing him addressing young men in Almora: “Will you get married in old age? If not, we will bring a girl for you from Bihar… you can get one there for ₹20,000 to 25,000.” He also said, “Come with me, we’ll get you married.” Meanwhile, Sahu apologized, claiming reporters misrepresented his words. “If my words offended anyone, I apologise with folded hands,” he added.
BJP Condemns Controversial Statement by Sahu
The BJP Uttarakhand unit condemned Sahu’s controversial statement, saying it does not reflect the party’s values. Spokesperson Manveer Singh Chauhan stressed that the BJP strongly opposes hateful statements against women. In addition, the Bihar State Women Commission announced it would issue a notice to Sahu. Chairperson Apsara criticized the remarks, calling them “highly condemnable” and highlighting the contradiction since his wife manages women and child welfare in Uttarakhand.

Opposition Reacts to Bihar Girls Remark
Opposition leaders attacked the Bihar girls remark, describing it as an insult to women. State Congress president Ganesh Godiyal said the statement reflects poorly on the party’s respect for women. Congress Mahila Morcha state president Jyoti Rautela added that such comments encourage social evils like human trafficking, child marriage, and exploitation. Furthermore, Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav criticized the BJP’s mindset toward women from Bihar and referenced past allegations of vote-buying schemes in the state.
Social Backlash and Wider Implications
The Uttarakhand minister’s husband remark has triggered widespread outrage on social media. Citizens demanded strict action against Sahu. Analysts warned that statements like these, even from relatives of public officials, can erode trust in governance and fuel social divisions. As a result, political parties must respond decisively. Overall, Sahu’s apology attempts to calm tensions, but the backlash continues. Leaders, parties, and authorities remain under scrutiny for failing to act against statements that undermine women’s rights and dignity.
