Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, one of the petitioners, has formally approached the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) seeking a ban on its release. Originally slated for a July 11, 2025 release, the film’s debut was halted following a stay order from the Delhi High Court, which directed the Centre to reassess the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, confirmed through his official X account that the petition was filed in compliance with the court’s directive.

Madani emphasized that the petition raises concerns that Udaipur Files could incite communal tension and harm India’s international image. The Ministry has been asked to respond within a week, with a hearing anticipated shortly. The film reportedly depicts the murder of Kanhaiya Lal Teli, a tailor from Udaipur, who was killed in June 2022 after allegedly supporting controversial remarks by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Muhammad. This incident sparked widespread protests and national outrage.
Petitioners argue that the film risks distorting communal narratives and promoting hate, despite the filmmakers’ claims of presenting an accurate portrayal of events. The Delhi High Court has urged the Centre to carefully reconsider the CBFC’s certification in light of all objections before deciding on the film’s release, highlighting the sensitivity of the subject matter and its potential social impact.
