Trump–Modi Friendship ‘Very Real’, India Essential Partner: US Envoy
US ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Monday that the Trump Modi friendship India shares remain strong and genuine, even as trade and tariff tensions continue between the two countries. Gor added that India remains an essential partner for the United States. He made the remarks soon after assuming office in New Delhi. His comments come amid renewed pressure from Washington over India’s purchase of Russian oil.
Trade Talks Continue Despite Tariff Pressure
Gor said there is “no partner more essential than India” for the US. He added that both governments remain in active discussions on trade. According to him, Washington plans to invite India to join Pax Silica next month. This move signals deeper cooperation in technology and strategy. Meanwhile, President Trump has warned that the US can raise tariffs on India quickly. The warning followed concerns over India’s energy trade with Russia.

Gor Takes Charge, Highlights Democratic Partnership
Sergio Gor formally took charge as the US ambassador to India on Monday. He is expected to present his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu later this week. Gor arrived in New Delhi in October 2025 and succeeded Eric Garcetti. During his first public address, he said he came with respect and a clear mission. He described the relationship as a meeting of the world’s oldest and largest democracies. He added that shared values will guide future cooperation.
Russia Sanctions Bill Raises Stakes
In recent days, President Trump has reiterated his warning on tariffs linked to Russian oil purchases. He recently approved a Russia sanctions bill. The proposal allows tariffs of up to 500 percent on countries trading Russian oil and uranium. India currently faces a 50 percent tariff rate, up from 25 percent earlier. The US imposed the additional levy citing India’s oil imports from Russia. Although the bill is yet to pass, it has raised concerns for bilateral trade.
