Second Fatal Accident in Days Raises Safety Concerns in Delhi
Barely four days after a tragic biker’s death in west Delhi’s Janakpuri, another fatal incident shocked the national capital. A 32-year-old man lost his life after he slipped into an open drain in Rohini’s Sector 32 area near Mahashakti Kali Temple on Tuesday. This incident once again exposed serious safety lapses at public infrastructure sites. Residents and commuters across the city have raised concerns about uncovered drains and pits that continue to endanger lives.
Victim Identified as Bihar Native Birju Kumar
News agency ANI identified the victim as Birju Kumar, a resident of Bihar’s Samastipur district. Local witness Sunil Kumar confirmed the identity and described the incident. He said the accident happened late at night under poor visibility. After spotting the victim inside the drain, residents immediately contacted the authorities. “We informed the administration, and they arrived and took away the body,” he said. Officials believe Birju Kumar lost his balance while walking near the open drain.

Witnesses Question Emergency Response Time
The Begumpur police station handled the case. Police officials stated that they received a call around 7:45 pm and sent a rescue team without delay. However, several residents challenged this claim. Tejpal Yadav said authorities responded only after he dialled the emergency number 112. He added that the victim remained inside the pit for several hours before help arrived. These statements have raised serious concerns about coordination among civic bodies and emergency services.
Earlier Janakpuri Tragedy Fuels Public Anger
Last week, another accident occurred in Janakpuri, where a 25-year-old banker fell into a 20-foot-deep pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board while riding his motorcycle. Police later recovered his body and vehicle and registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. These consecutive incidents have intensified public anger and strengthened demands for accountability. Citizens now urge authorities to install proper barricades, display warning signs, and conduct regular safety inspections. As Delhi continues infrastructure development, experts emphasize that officials must place public safety above all else.
