President stresses women-led development
India celebrated its 77th Republic Day in 2026 with patriotic fervour. On this occasion, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of the celebrations. Notably, she highlighted the decisive role of women in building a Viksit Bharat. While referring to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, the President said the law will expand women’s political participation. As a result, the idea of women-led development will gain new strength. Moreover, Murmu praised Indian women for breaking social barriers. Overall, she said their contribution is shaping a more inclusive republic.
Self-reliance and economic resilience in focus
Meanwhile, President Murmu spoke about India’s economic priorities. In particular, she stressed the need to boost domestic production. At a time when global trade faces uncertainty, self-reliance has become essential. Additionally, she referred to rising tariff pressures from the United States. Therefore, strengthening indigenous industries is crucial. Importantly, women entrepreneurs are leading this transformation. Consequently, innovation and sustainable growth are gaining momentum.

Tribute to Sardar Patel and national unity
Turning to history, the President paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. She described him as the architect of national unity. Last year, India celebrated his 150th birth anniversary. Through these commemorations, national pride was reinforced. Furthermore, Murmu said Patel’s vision united the nation. From north to south, India reflects cultural harmony. Hence, efforts that promote unity remain vital.
Republic Day events and Padma Awards
Finally, President Murmu extended Republic Day greetings to Indians worldwide. According to her, the occasion allows reflection on India’s journey since 1947. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the Padma Awards 2026. Late actor Dharmendra Singh Deol and former Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandhan will receive the Padma Vibhushan. Additionally, the Republic Day parade will feature a tableau on 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’. Together, these events celebrate India’s heritage and democratic spirit.
