Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticized the BJP government, accusing it of betraying farmers while catering to corporate interests. On Thursday, Gandhi blamed the rising number of farmer suicides on the government’s failure to fulfill its promises. “Modi ji had pledged to double farmers’ income, but today, those who feed the nation are being pushed to the brink. This system is silently but steadily killing our farmers, while the Prime Minister is busy managing his PR image,” he stated on X.

Citing distressing figures from Maharashtra, particularly the drought-prone Vidarbha region, Gandhi highlighted the growing burden on farmers. He said, “Every day, farmers sink deeper into debt. Seeds, fertilizers, and diesel prices have soared, yet there’s no assurance of a fair Minimum Support Price (MSP). When farmers plead for loan waivers, they are met with silence.”
The agrarian crisis in Maharashtra has long been fueled by crop failures, rising input costs, and limited access to institutional credit. Trapped in a vicious cycle of debt and exploitation by private moneylenders, many farmers are left with no option but to take their own lives. Gandhi’s remarks underline the deepening rural distress and the urgent need for policy reforms to support India’s farming community.
