During his visit to the Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strong bond between India and the island nation, saying, “For us, it is always friendship first.” Speaking alongside Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi highlighted the close ties and deep-rooted relationship between the two countries, describing India as the Maldives’ closest neighbour.

He noted that while India and the Maldives are celebrating 60 years of formal diplomatic ties, their connection is much older and deeper, comparing it to the depth of the sea. He also mentioned the release of commemorative stamps featuring traditional boats from both nations, symbolizing their shared heritage and journey as not just neighbours but partners.

Modi assured continued Indian support for strengthening the Maldives’ defence and announced a $565 million line of credit. He said talks have begun on a Free Trade Agreement and plans are in place to finalize a Bilateral Investment Treaty soon. He also spoke about the local currency settlement system, allowing direct trade between the Indian Rupee and the Maldivian Rufiyaa. Highlighting the growing use of India’s UPI system in the Maldives, he said it will boost sectors like tourism and retail. As a mark of respect, the Maldives National Defence Force presented him with the traditional ‘Haiykolhu’.
