Historic Launch of Delhi-Meerut Corridor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro on Sunday, February 22. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also attended the ceremony. The project will improve travel between Delhi and Meerut and help commuters from nearby districts. Moreover, it aims to reduce congestion on roads connecting the two cities.
Ride and Dedication Ceremony
PM Modi flagged off the corridor from Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station. He then rode the Meerut Metro to Meerut South Station, where he interacted with schoolchildren and officials. Additionally, he dedicated the full Delhi-Meerut corridor to the nation. The inauguration included the 5 km Sarai Kale Khan–New Ashok Nagar stretch in Delhi as well as the 21 km Meerut South–Modipuram stretch in Uttar Pradesh.

Project Details and Cost
The Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro together cover 82.15 km, with 70 km elevated and 12 km underground. Built at an estimated cost of ₹30,274 crore, the project cuts travel time to just 55 minutes. Before this launch, rapid rail services ran only between Ashok Vihar and Meerut South. Moreover, the fare for the full journey has been fixed at ₹213, around ₹2.60 per kilometre, making it affordable for commuters.
Modernizing Urban Transport in Meerut
Meerut now has metro rail services for the first time. In addition, PM Modi will inaugurate other development projects worth ₹12,930 crore in the city. This launch will boost regional connectivity, cut travel time, and improve the daily commute. Furthermore, it marks a major step in modernizing urban transport and strengthening public transit infrastructure across the region.
