Pinarayi Vijayan Slams The Kerala Story 2 Trailer
The trailer of The Kerala Story 2 has triggered sharp political reactions shortly after its release. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly objected to the film and described it as “false propaganda” and a “threat to secularism.” The sequel claims to depict cases related to forced religious conversion and exploitation. However, critics argue that the narrative paints a distorted picture of Kerala’s social fabric. Vijayan issued an official statement condemning the film and questioning its intent.
CM Questions Film’s Intent and Messaging
Vijayan said the first instalment aimed to spread hatred against Kerala and undermine its secular values. He expressed concern that the sequel continues the same narrative. According to the Chief Minister, the film portrays even consensual interfaith marriages as examples of forced conversion. He argued that such storytelling creates division and spreads communal tension. Vijayan further stated that Kerala has a long-standing tradition of harmony among communities and does not deserve to be portrayed as a conflict-ridden state.

Call to Protect Kerala’s Secular Identity
The Chief Minister urged citizens to collectively reject attempts to defame the state. He emphasised that Kerala stands as a model of religious coexistence, sustainable development, and law and order. Vijayan described the makers’ approach as harmful to social unity. He also questioned how certain films receive clearance while others face restrictions at festivals. According to him, authorities and citizens must safeguard Kerala’s secular foundation and resist divisive narratives that disturb peace and tranquillity.
Film’s Makers Defend Their Stand
Meanwhile, the film’s team defended their work. Director Kamakhya Narayan Singh and producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah have maintained that the sequel draws from real cases documented in India’s legal system. Shah said the film attempts to represent broader national concerns through selected stories. The first film, directed by Sudipto Sen, achieved commercial success despite controversy and bans in several regions. It reportedly earned over ₹300 crore worldwide and won two National Film Awards. The Kerala Story 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on 27 February.
