Shubman Gill’s debut series as India’s Test captain has become a challenging experience. After starting strong with two centuries and a double ton, Gill’s form and decisions as captain have dipped in the last two matches, drawing criticism—especially during the Manchester Test.

One key point of criticism has been his delayed use of Washington Sundar, a spinner who could have made an impact earlier on a turning pitch. Despite Sundar’s success in the previous Test at Lord’s, Gill didn’t bring him into the attack until the 60th over. When Sundar finally bowled, he picked up two quick wickets, but England had already built a massive total of 669.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain offered advice, urging Gill to block out social media and focus on learning. “When Gill scored 269, people were asking ‘Who is Kohli? Who is Rohit?’ Now, after two bad games, every decision is questioned,” said Hussain, highlighting the fickle nature of public opinion.
England, led by big knocks from Joe Root (150), Ben Stokes (141), and openers Crawley and Duckett, dominated the Indian bowlers. With England in full control, India now needs a miracle from their batters to save the series.
