Tragic Collapse on Mumbai’s Metro 4 Corridor
A deadly accident occurred in Mulund on Saturday when a parapet segment from the under-construction Metro 4 corridor fell onto vehicles on LBS Road. The collapse crushed an autorickshaw and a car, killing 46-year-old Ramdhani Yadav and injuring three others. Commuters and locals rushed to help the victims before emergency teams arrived. MMRDA Fines Contractors, Launches Safety Review
After the incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) took swift action. It imposed a ₹5 crore fine on Reliance Infrastructure and its sub-contractor, Milan Road Buildtech LLP. The authority also penalised the project’s consulting agencies and ordered an immediate safety audit. Officials began reviewing construction practices at similar sites across Mumbai. They also halted work on the affected stretch to prevent further risks. MMRDA stated that it would strengthen monitoring systems and enforce stricter safety rules.
Police Action, Inquiry, and Government Support
Police arrested five people, including senior officials of the sub-contractor and a project manager linked to the project. Investigators started examining quality checks, supervision methods, and contractor compliance. The government announced ₹5 lakh in compensation for the victim’s family. It also assured free medical care for the injured. Authorities suspended an MMRDA engineer for negligence and demanded detailed reports from all agencies involved. The inquiry committee aims to submit its findings at the earliest. Officials said they would hold individuals accountable if evidence proves misconduct.
Political Response and Calls for Accountability
Local BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha blamed weak supervision for the tragedy. He said earlier inspections had exposed multiple safety violations. He claimed that he had warned officials about risks at the site. Kotecha also wrote to MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, urging strict action against the contractor. Opposition leaders accused the government of ignoring public safety. They demanded long-term reforms and transparent monitoring. As investigations continue, the tragedy has intensified public demand for safer infrastructure and stronger enforcement across Mumbai.
