Altercation Turns Fatal at Malad Station

A 33-year-old college professor was stabbed to death during an altercation inside a Mumbai local train at Malad railway station on Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 5.30 pm when the victim, Alok Kumar Singh, was getting off a Churchgate–Borivali slow train. Singh lived in Kandivali and worked as a mathematics teacher at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics in Vile Parle. According to police, a dispute broke out between Singh and another passenger inside the second-class coach and escalated as they stepped onto Platform 1 at Malad station.

Accused Attacks with Sharp Weapon

As the argument intensified on the platform, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp object, believed to be a knife, and stabbed Singh in the stomach before fleeing the scene. Witnesses said the attack happened suddenly, leaving passengers in shock. Singh’s colleague and railway police rushed him to Shatabdi Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead due to excessive blood loss. Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Sunita Salunke-Thackeray confirmed the cause of death and said the attack appeared to stem from a sudden clash among passengers while disembarking.

CCTV Helps Police Track Suspect

Meanwhile, the accused took advantage of the crowded station to escape. However, police quickly launched an investigation and scanned CCTV footage from Malad station and surrounding areas. The visuals helped investigators identify the suspect’s movements before and after the attack. A senior Western Railway official said preliminary findings suggest the dispute began over space while getting down from the train. Railway police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) coordinated closely to trace the suspect within hours of the incident.

Arrest Made, Investigation Continues

Within 12 hours, police arrested a 27-year-old daily-wage labourer in connection with the murder. Officials confirmed that the accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is underway to establish the exact motive behind the attack. The brutal killing has once again raised concerns over commuter safety on Mumbai’s local trains, especially during peak hours. Authorities have urged passengers to report disputes early and assured increased surveillance at busy stations.
