Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protest
On Monday, the Lok Sabha faced repeated disruptions as Opposition members demanded a discussion on the India-US interim trade deal framework. As a result, the House assembled at 11 am but encountered several interruptions. First, it adjourned twice in the morning and resumed briefly at 2 pm. However, fresh protests soon forced another adjournment till Tuesday. Overall, these developments highlighted rising tensions between the government and the Opposition.
Rahul Gandhi Claims Speaker’s Assurance
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the Speaker had personally assured him an opportunity to speak before the budget discussion. According to him, the chair later withdrew the promise. During the session, Gandhi asked for clarity on whether he could raise key issues. Furthermore, he expressed disappointment and accused the chair of breaking its commitment.

Kiren Rijiju Rejects Allegations
In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly denied Gandhi’s claims and called them incorrect. He maintained that Speaker Om Birla had never given such an assurance. Earlier, leaders discussed the matter in a meeting that Congress MP KC Venugopal also attended. Moreover, Rijiju said the Speaker only urged all parties to cooperate for smooth functioning. Therefore, he insisted that Gandhi’s statement was “100 per cent false.”
No-Confidence Motion Talk Adds to Tension
At the same time, reports suggested that the Opposition may move a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. Meanwhile, MP Sandhya Ray, who presided over the session, said she had received no formal notice from Gandhi. Consequently, she stressed that members must follow parliamentary procedures. As the deadlock continued, she adjourned the House for the day. Ultimately, the standoff has raised concerns about legislative productivity and political stability in the coming days.
