Moderate Earthquake in Bangladesh Jolts Kolkata
Strong tremors rattled Kolkata and several districts of south Bengal on Friday afternoon after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck neighbouring Bangladesh. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at approximately 1:52 pm local time. The agency placed the epicentre near Khulna in southwestern Bangladesh. The tremors lasted several seconds and were widely felt, particularly in high-rise buildings across the city.
Earlier, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the magnitude at 5.5 and located the epicentre about 26 kilometres southwest of Khulna. However, variations in early magnitude estimates are common as agencies refine seismic readings. Later assessments confirmed the quake as moderate in intensity.
Residents Rush Outdoors as Buildings Shake
As the ground shook, office workers in Kolkata quickly evacuated buildings as a precaution. Meanwhile, residents in several housing complexes gathered in open spaces. Although panic spread briefly, authorities reported no immediate structural damage or casualties. Emergency services remained on alert while monitoring the situation.
The tremors felt stronger in elevated structures due to the city’s soft alluvial soil conditions. Experts note that regions in the Gangetic delta often experience amplified shaking during moderate quakes. Therefore, even a magnitude 5.3 earthquake can cause noticeable vibrations across a wide radius.

Epicentre Close to India-Bangladesh Border
Khulna lies close to the India-Bangladesh border and the ecologically sensitive Sundarbans delta region. According to USGS data, the quake also occurred roughly 23 kilometres from Taki in West Bengal. Given the proximity — approximately 100 to 150 kilometres from Kolkata — the tremors travelled efficiently across south Bengal.
Seismologists classify a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as moderate. While such quakes rarely cause major destruction, they can trigger anxiety and minor damage in vulnerable structures. For now, officials continue to assess the situation. However, Friday’s tremor serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic sensitivity and the need for preparedness across eastern India.
