The release of The Kerala Story 2, scheduled for Friday, February 27, now faces uncertainty. On Thursday afternoon, just hours before its theatrical debut, the Kerala High Court granted an interim stay on the film’s release, PTI reported. So far, the makers have not issued an official response.
Court hears plea against release
The court heard a petition challenging the film’s release. During Wednesday’s proceedings, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas remarked that the makers did not appear keen on screening the film for the court. He observed that they wanted the issue decided on whether the petition qualified as private or public litigation.
Consequently, the court issued an interim stay a day before release. As a result, theatres that had scheduled shows now await further clarity.

Controversy around the film
The sequel explores themes of religious conversion and coercion across Kerala, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. While the makers claim the story draws from real cases, critics argue that it portrays Kerala negatively and risks fuelling communal tensions.
Earlier this week, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the film. He called it a threat to secularism and urged people to reject attempts to depict Kerala as a hub of terrorism.
However, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah defended the project. He said the film does not target the state and aims to raise awareness.
CBFC clearance and cast details
The film received a U/A certificate from the CBFC last week. It stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha.
For now, the interim stay puts the February 27 release on hold. Meanwhile, industry observers expect the makers to seek urgent relief to clear the way for the film’s release.
