Kaif Calls for Change Ahead of Big Final
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has urged the team management to consider dropping Abhishek Sharma for the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against New Zealand national cricket team. The high-stakes clash will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Kaif suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav consider giving the struggling opener a break for the crucial match. The former cricketer believes the team has enough bench strength to make tactical changes in the shortest format of the game.
Abhishek Sharma Struggles With Form
Abhishek Sharma has endured a difficult campaign in the tournament. The left-handed batter has crossed the 50-run mark only once during the competition. Opposition teams have also found a clear weakness in his game. Many sides introduced spinners early in the powerplay to trouble him. The strategy worked repeatedly, as Abhishek lost his wicket to spin bowlers on several occasions. His aggressive approach at the start of the innings has also backfired. Instead of rotating strike and building partnerships, he often tried to attack from the first ball.
Illness and Confidence Issues Add to Worries
Abhishek’s struggles began even before the tournament started. The young opener suffered a stomach infection and had to be hospitalised shortly before the competition. The illness reportedly caused weight loss and affected his batting rhythm. Observers believe the change in his physical condition disrupted his timing and bat swing. His lack of confidence also showed in the field. During the Super 8 match against the West Indies national cricket team, he dropped two chances that could have changed the game.

Kaif Suggests Rinku Singh as Replacement
Kaif believes India should consider bringing Rinku Singh into the playing XI for the final. According to him, Rinku has proven his consistency in domestic tournaments, the Indian Premier League, and other formats of the game. Kaif also pointed out that the team recently made a successful change by including Sanju Samson, who delivered match-winning performances against England and the West Indies. The former India batter stressed that Abhishek Sharma is still developing as a player. He added that performing under pressure in ICC tournaments requires experience, and the youngster still needs time to become a complete international cricketer.
