Indian-Origin Man Dies After Long Hospital Wait
A 44-year-old Indian-origin man, Prashant Sreekumar, tragically died on Monday in Edmonton, Canada after waiting over 8 hours in the emergency room of Grey Nuns Community Hospital. Sreekumar, an accountant and father of three, began experiencing severe chest pain while at work. A client immediately took him to the hospital. After triage, hospital staff told him to wait in the ER. Hours later, he collapsed in the treatment area and suffered a cardiac arrest.
Family Speaks Out
Sreekumar’s family shared the ordeal on social media. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, said his son repeatedly told him, “Papa, I cannot bear the pain.” The family claimed his blood pressure reached 210 while waiting. Despite repeated complaints, staff reportedly offered only Tylenol. They said the ECG results showed nothing significant, so the hospital advised him to continue waiting. The family described the delay as “frustrating and heartbreaking” and demanded urgent accountability.

Collapsed in Treatment Area
When Prashant finally entered the treatment area, he collapsed immediately. Nurses had monitored his vitals, but his condition worsened quickly. He leaves behind his wife and three children, aged three, ten, and fourteen. Family friend Varinder Bhullar called the loss “huge” and described the incident as “shocking and unacceptable.” The family insists that hospitals must improve emergency care and prevent such tragedies in the future.
Hospital Response and Public Concern
Covenant Health, which operates Grey Nuns Community Hospital, confirmed the case is under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The hospital expressed condolences to the family and said, “There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff.” The incident has sparked public concern over ER delays in Canadian hospitals and highlighted the urgent need for timely care for patients with severe symptoms. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances fully.
