Indian American Student Killed in Austin Mass Shooting
A mass shooting in Austin, Texas, claimed the life of 21-year-old Indian-American student Savitha Shan on Sunday night. The attack unfolded at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, a busy nightlife area near the University of Texas at Austin. According to the Austin Police Department, Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington died in the incident. While officials have confirmed two fatalities, several reports suggest the toll could be higher. In addition, more than a dozen people suffered injuries, some of them critical.
Police Investigate Possible Terror Motive
Meanwhile, police identified 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne as the suspect. Authorities say he first drove past the bar and then returned before opening fire from his SUV. Officers responded within minutes and shot him at the scene. Subsequently, investigators began examining whether the attack qualifies as terrorism. Reports claim the suspect wore clothing featuring an Iranian flag design and religious words. However, officials have not confirmed any ideological links. At the same time, global tensions have intensified following the reported killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, adding further context to the investigation.

University Community Reacts with Grief
Following the tragedy, tributes poured in from faculty and students. Russ Finney, an assistant professor at the McCombs School of Business, described Savitha as a “superstar student.” Not only did she pursue a double major with honours, but she also planned to graduate in May. Moreover, she actively participated in student organizations and stood out in the classroom. According to Finney, several other students remain hospitalized in serious condition. As a result, the entire campus community continues to mourn.
Chaos Erupts on West Sixth Street
During the shooting, the nightlife district was packed with college students. Witnesses said gunshots rang out suddenly, causing immediate panic. Consequently, people ran for cover and hid behind vehicles and inside nearby buildings. Soon after, police secured the area and launched a detailed investigation. Although authorities have released preliminary information, they continue to examine evidence and question witnesses. Ultimately, the incident has reignited concerns about gun violence and public safety across the United States.
