The Indian government has responded to a UK report alleging that the family of a British victim from the Air India flight 171 crash was mistakenly given the wrong body. Officials stated that they are working closely with British authorities to address these concerns.

The tragic crash of the Boeing 787 near Ahmedabad on June 12 resulted in 242 fatalities on board and 19 deaths on the ground, including 52 British citizens. According to the Daily Mail, mistakes were made during the identification and repatriation of some victims, with one family reportedly abandoning funeral plans after being told their loved one’s coffin contained the remains of an unidentified passenger. In another instance, remains from more than one victim were mixed and had to be separated before burial.
India’s External Affairs Ministry emphasized that all procedures were followed with professionalism and respect for the deceased. Both countries have launched high-level inquiries to investigate the issue, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to discuss these concerns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the UK later this month. The visit will also include meetings with King Charles III and the signing of a bilateral free trade agreement.
