Strategic Push Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Israel from February 25–26. The trip aims to deepen strategic and defence ties. Both nations are likely to sign an MoU on security cooperation. However, no specific defence deal will be signed during the visit. Officials describe defence ties as an ongoing process.
Modi shares close ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As a result, both countries coordinate closely on key political issues. They also maintain a unified stand against terrorism.
Focus on Anti-Ballistic Missile Defence
India is exploring joint development of advanced missile defence systems. This initiative falls under Mission Sudershan. The goal is to protect Indian cities from long-range missile threats.
Israel has a proven multi-layered missile shield. It includes the long-range Arrow system. It also features David’s Sling for medium-range threats. The short-range Iron Dome adds another layer of protection. These systems have performed well in real combat situations. India now seeks access to similar technologies, including laser-based defence platforms.
Stand-Off Weapons and Naval Defence Plans
India is also considering long-range stand-off weapons. During Operation Sindoor, Indian forces used Rampage missiles and loitering munitions effectively. Future plans include acquiring Spice 1000 precision-guided bombs. Discussions also cover Air LORA and the Ice Breaker missile system.
In addition, the Navy is assessing extended-range Barak systems. These systems will help protect warships from aerial and surface threats.
Broader Strategic Cooperation
Defence remains central to the talks. However, cooperation will also expand into science, agriculture, and water technology. Technology transfer is a key focus area.
Bilateral defence cooperation is valued at nearly USD 10 billion in the coming years. Although no contracts will be signed now, both sides aim for deeper collaboration. The visit signals long-term strategic alignment and growing trust between India and Israel.
