Himachal Student Dies After Ragging and Assault

A 19-year-old student of a government college in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, died after ragging and sexual harassment. Her father alleged that three senior students — Harshita, Aakriti, and Komolika — beat her on September 18, while a professor, Ashok Kumar, subjected her to obscene acts. The victim’s mental health deteriorated due to the harassment, leading to her death during treatment at a Ludhiana hospital on December 26, 2025. Authorities registered a case after the father’s complaint. Consequently, the incident highlighted the urgent need to tackle ragging and sexual harassment in Himachal colleges.

Police Book Students and Professor Over Himachal Student Ragging

The police booked the three students for ragging and voluntarily causing hurt. Meanwhile, the professor faces charges of sexual harassment. Officials registered the case under Sections 75, 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institution (Prohibition of) Ragging Act, 2009. Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed that investigators are reviewing medical records, video evidence, and witness statements. Earlier, a video recorded by the student before her death went viral, showing her accusing the professor of intimidation and harassment.

College Proceedings and Academic Pressure on Himachal Student

The student enrolled in the college in 2024 and faced ragging from senior students. However, she failed her BA first-year exams and stopped attending classes after July 2025. The college struck her name off the rolls in August. Later, she sought re-admission but was told she would advance only after clearing re-evaluation. The professor denied the allegations, claiming he was not teaching her in the current session. Some colleagues supported him. The incident has exposed serious gaps in anti-ragging enforcement across Himachal colleges.

Leaders Demand Justice for Himachal College Student

The case has drawn nationwide attention. Student groups and political leaders are demanding strict action. Moreover, ABVP state secretary Nancy Atal said the accused must face justice to prevent future incidents. Police continue investigating while collecting medical records, CCTV footage, and witness statements. Therefore, authorities aim to ensure accountability and prevent further deaths. The Himachal student’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for stricter anti-ragging and harassment measures across colleges.
