GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has delivered a clear warning to developers worldwide: embrace artificial intelligence or risk becoming outdated in their careers. In a recent post on X, Dohmke stated that AI is expected to write about 90 percent of all code within the next two to five years. Rather than fearing this change, many developers are optimistic and actively adapting. They are learning to work alongside AI tools, improving their prompting techniques, carefully reviewing AI-generated code, and taking on roles that require more advanced thinking.
Dohmke emphasized that this shift goes beyond just boosting productivity; it’s about reinventing the way developers work. He also stressed that education must change accordingly. Coding classes should move past simply teaching syntax and focus more on critical thinking, encouraging students to question AI outputs and deeply understand system design.
His remarks come after an internal GitHub study involving 22 developers, which showed that those who fully embraced AI saw major changes in both their work habits and career outlook. These developers reported feeling more ambitious, solving problems more effectively, and enjoying their jobs more. Dohmke’s message makes it clear: adapting to AI is essential for anyone who wants to stay relevant in software development.
