Gautam Gambhir recently addressed the controversial BCCI policy that has drawn criticism from prominent Indian players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Following India’s 1-3 loss in Australia, the BCCI introduced strict regulations, including limits on family travel, personal staff, and mandatory participation in domestic cricket. This move surprised many, with Kohli and Rohit even returning to play for their state teams after a long hiatus. The restrictions on family presence during tours became a particularly sensitive issue, sparking discontent among players.

Gambhir, who faced backlash for his perceived association with the policy, clarified his stance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus during tours. Speaking to Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of the 3rd Test against England, he acknowledged that while family support is valuable, players must prioritize their primary responsibility—to represent the country with dedication. He stated, “You are here for a purpose. It’s not a holiday,” underscoring that commitment to the nation’s cause should outweigh other concerns during demanding tours.
Virat Kohli also expressed his disappointment with the restrictions, highlighting the emotional grounding that family presence provides amid the pressures of international cricket. Speaking at the IPL’s Indian Sports Summit, Kohli remarked on the lack of understanding about the importance of family support, criticizing the narrative that players should be kept away from their loved ones. Both Gambhir and Kohli’s remarks reflect the ongoing tension between strict team protocols and players’ personal needs.
