France Flags ‘Disinformation’ Campaign Against Rafale Jets, Points to China and Pakistan After India’s Operation Sindoor.

The French defence ministry has raised concerns over an alleged disinformation campaign targeting its Rafale fighter jets, claiming the attacks were not random but part of a coordinated effort to promote Chinese military technology. According to reports from French intelligence, China allegedly used its embassies and defence attachés to influence foreign governments and discourage the purchase of Rafale jets in favour of Chinese-made alternatives. The campaign appears aimed at damaging the reputation of France’s flagship fighter aircraft and undermining its defence exports, particularly in Asia, where France is actively building strategic ties with countries like India.

The disinformation efforts intensified following reports during the recent India-Pakistan conflict in May, when Pakistan claimed it had downed five Indian aircraft, including three Rafales, during Operation Sindoor. While India has not confirmed these losses, Air Marshal AK Bharti responded to the reports by stating that “losses are a part of any combat scenario,” without directly acknowledging the Rafale claims. These unverified reports prompted some nations to question the jet’s capabilities, further fuelling the anti-Rafale narrative.

French officials have strongly pushed back against what they describe as a deliberate campaign of “Rafale-bashing” orchestrated by China and Pakistan. The campaign reportedly involved doctored visuals of Rafale wreckage, AI-generated content, and the deployment of over 1,000 fake social media accounts to promote the superiority of Chinese defence technology. France is now actively working to counter the narrative and protect its strategic defence partnerships, especially in regions where China’s influence is rapidly growing.
