Grandmother Says She Begged Driver for Help
A six-year-old girl lost her life after a speeding car rammed into the e-rickshaw she was travelling in with her grandmother in Delhi’s Janakpuri area. The accident occurred near Block C while the child was on her way to school on Tuesday morning. Her grandmother, Mercy Xavier (57), suffered injuries in the crash. According to police, the impact caused the e-rickshaw to overturn, throwing all occupants onto the road. The elderly woman later claimed that she pleaded with the car driver to help rush the child to hospital, but he allegedly fled the scene.
Mercy said the e-rickshaw was moving slowly when a fast white car struck it from behind. “I begged the driver to take my baby to the hospital in his car, but he ran away,” she told PTI. The child sustained severe head and chest injuries. Police confirmed that she was initially declared brain dead at a hospital before her family shifted her to another facility in Dwarka, where she died on Wednesday. Doctors conducted a postmortem at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Accused Arrested, Case Registered
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Darade Sharad Bhaskar said officers traced and arrested the accused driver, identified as Sanjeev Dabas. He works as a lab assistant and was reportedly heading to work when the crash took place. Police seized the car and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Investigators continue to examine CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts as part of the ongoing probe.
The child’s mother said her own mother stopped several vehicles and sought help, but no one responded. A nurse and another passerby eventually helped take the injured child to hospital. Neighbours described the girl as cheerful and said her grandmother regularly dropped her to school. The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about road safety and the urgent need for responsible driving in the national capital.
