Delhi Launches Canteens on Vajpayee’s Birth Centenary
The Delhi government opened 100 Atal Canteens on the birth centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 45 centres and said the remaining will open soon. GRAP rules slowed construction, but the government still began meal service at most sites. The project comes from a ₹100 crore budget promise in the 2025–26 plan.
₹5 Meals Twice a Day
Each canteen offers two meals a day at just ₹5. The menu includes dal-chawal, vegetables, and roti. Every centre aims to serve 500 plates in the morning and evening. The canteens use LPG systems, industrial RO water units, and cold storage. CCTV cameras allow real-time monitoring through the city’s digital platform.

Government Defends the Initiative
CM Gupta said earlier governments made promises but never funded them. She claimed the current administration cleared ₹2,700 crore for old pending projects. An inter-departmental committee now oversees menu planning, site approval, supply management, and operations.
Leaders Highlight Welfare Focus
Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar said Delhi residents lacked basic facilities for 20 years. He added that development is now faster because the BJP governs both Delhi and the Centre. With all 100 Atal Canteens coming online soon, the government aims to expand affordable meals and strengthen food security.
