Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged filmmakers and TV producers to promote the use of Bengali in their work, stressing the importance of preserving the state’s language and cultural identity. Speaking at the ‘Mahanayak Samman’ ceremony on the death anniversary of legendary actor Uttam Kumar, Banerjee said every language is beautiful, but it is vital to give priority to one’s mother tongue.

“While we embrace the richness of various cultures across India, it’s equally important for each state to protect and cherish its own language and traditions,” she said. “We must ensure our younger generation values and respects our heritage.”

Addressing the television industry specifically, the Chief Minister encouraged the inclusion of Bengali songs in serials that often rely heavily on Hindi tracks. “Why not highlight the immense talent we have in Bengal? Our lyricists and composers create beautiful music that deserves to be heard,” she said.

Banerjee emphasized that Bengali, with its emotional depth and cultural richness, should be more visible in mainstream media. Her appeal was both a cultural reminder and a call to action—urging creators to take pride in Bengal’s legacy while continuing to welcome diversity.
