BMC Elections 2026 LIVE: ‘Marathi Manoos’ Shapes Campaign Narrative

Political activity across Maharashtra has intensified ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections on January 15. As a result, parties across the spectrum have placed the ‘Marathi Manoos’ at the centre of their campaigns. Consequently, identity politics now dominates the high-stakes civic contest in Mumbai. Meanwhile, sharp exchanges between ruling allies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar have added to the tension. At the same time, Opposition parties have stepped up attacks over alleged Hindi imposition. Notably, polls will also take place in 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, with results expected on January 16.

Mahayuti Pushes Housing and Marathi Cultural Revival

On Sunday, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, released its poll manifesto. Through this move, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde positioned the alliance as a defender of Marathi interests. In particular, they promised to help the Marathi manoos return to Mumbai from the outskirts. Currently, rising housing costs have forced many families to relocate. To address this, the manifesto offers interest-free loans of up to ₹50 lakh for women entrepreneurs. In addition, it promises improved travel benefits for women on BEST buses and an 8% water tax freeze for five years. Moreover, Shinde announced plans to build 3.5 million affordable homes through redevelopment projects.

Raj Thackeray’s Warning Intensifies Poll Rhetoric

Meanwhile, MNS chief Raj Thackeray has intensified the campaign after reuniting with his brother Uddhav Thackeray for the civic polls. During a public address, he described the BMC elections as a decisive moment for the Marathi community. Accordingly, he urged voters to unite to protect Maharashtra’s linguistic identity. Although Thackeray said he does not oppose Hindi as a language, he warned against any attempt to impose it in the state. As expected, his remarks quickly became a rallying point and sharpened political rhetoric across party lines.

Pawar Tie-Up in Pune Highlights Local Strategies

Beyond Mumbai, shifting alliances have further reshaped the political landscape. In a significant development, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) have decided to contest the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls together. This move is notable because Ajit Pawar’s faction remains part of the Mahayuti at the state level. Therefore, the alliance underlines the growing importance of local strategies in civic elections. As campaigning enters its final phase, the BMC Elections 2026 have emerged as a key test of political strength, governance delivery and Marathi identity across urban Maharashtra.
