EC Publishes Assam Draft Rolls After Special Revision
The Election Commission of India released Assam’s draft electoral rolls after a Special Revision exercise. The state now has 2,51,09,754 registered voters. The rolls exclude 93,021 D-voters, whose citizenship status is pending verification. The revision comes ahead of the Assembly polls, which are less than six months away. Officials carried out the verification from November 22 to December 20.
Over 10.56 Lakh Names Removed for Death, Migration, or Duplication
EC officials removed 10,56,291 names from the voter list. They deleted 4,78,992 names of deceased voters. Another 5,23,680 voters had shifted to new locations. Officials also identified 53,619 duplicate entries during the door-to-door checks. These deletions aim to produce a clean and accurate electoral roll. The draft rolls now reflect updated household data from more than 61 lakh homes across the state.

Who Are D-Voters in Assam?
D-voters remain a sensitive category in the state. These voters face doubts about their citizenship under the Foreigners Act, 1946. Special tribunals mark these individuals as “D”, and they cannot receive voter ID cards until they clear their cases. The draft rolls carry their details forward without any changes. This measure ensures transparency and avoids errors during legal scrutiny.
Assam Prepares for Error-Free Rolls Before February
A large team managed the revision exercise. It included 35 District Election Officers, 126 Electoral Registration Officers, 1,260 Assistant EROs, 29,656 Booth Level Officers, and 2,578 supervisors. Political parties also joined the process through 61,533 Booth Level Agents. Citizens can file claims and objections until January 22. The EC will publish the final rolls on February 10. The exercise aims to include all eligible voters, correct clerical mistakes, and remove invalid entries. After rationalisation, Assam now has 31,486 polling stations, setting the stage for a smooth electoral process in 2025.
