Criticism Row Intensifies After India Clash

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has strongly responded to recent remarks by all-rounder Shadab Khan during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The controversy began after Pakistan’s defeat to India on February 15. Following that loss, Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf advised selectors to consider young talent. They argued that senior players needed to take responsibility.

However, after Pakistan defeated Namibia in Colombo, Shadab responded firmly. He reminded critics that his team beat India in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai. Moreover, he pointed out that previous generations had failed to achieve that milestone. As a result, his comments sparked debate across Pakistan’s cricket community.

Afridi Urges Focus on Big-Match Performances

In response, Afridi acknowledged the 2021 victory. Nevertheless, he said the team failed to handle the respect that followed. According to him, internal issues emerged soon after that historic win. Furthermore, he reminded Shadab that former cricketers had publicly supported him during tough phases.

“Shadab beta, perform karo,” Afridi said during a TV interview. He stressed that actions on the field matter more than words off it. Additionally, he emphasized that great players prove themselves against top opponents. In contrast, performances against smaller teams do not silence critics for long. Therefore, Afridi urged Shadab to deliver in the Super 8 stage. Pakistan will next face New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka in crucial fixtures.

Meanwhile, reports suggest the Pakistan Cricket Board cautioned Shadab over his remarks. Officials reportedly advised players to focus only on tournament performance. Despite the controversy, Pakistan gained momentum after a 102-run win over Namibia. Shadab contributed with an unbeaten 35 and three wickets in that match. Now, however, the real test begins. If he performs against elite teams, criticism will fade. Otherwise, the debate may intensify further as Pakistan chase World Cup success.
