Renowned actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan will hoist the Indian national flag during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 as part of the Independence Day celebrations this August. The flag hoisting has become a key tradition of the festival, symbolizing unity and pride for the Indian community abroad. The event brings together people from different backgrounds including Indian and Australian communities to honour India’s heritage and celebrate its cinema.

Supported by the Government of Victoria, IFFM is the largest Indian film festival held outside of India. Each year, it showcases a wide range of films across languages and regions and hosts prominent figures from the film industry. Aamir Khan’s participation this year adds a special significance to the ceremony. Known for films that strike a balance between mainstream appeal and social relevance, his presence reflects the festival’s commitment to meaningful and inclusive storytelling.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange expressed how emotional the flag ceremony is, especially when done abroad. She described it as a unifying experience filled with pride and honour. IFFM 2025 will screen over 75 films in 31 languages and include panel discussions, masterclasses, and cultural events to promote global connections through cinema.
