India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has clarified that he ruled himself out of contention for the Test captaincy during the IPL as part of his ongoing workload management strategy. Bumrah, known for his consistent performances across formats, informed the BCCI of his decision to focus solely on his bowling responsibilities rather than taking up a leadership role.

“I’ve had detailed discussions with the medical team managing my back, including my surgeon, and they’ve always advised me to be smart with my workload,” Bumrah shared. “After assessing the upcoming challenges, especially a five-match Test series, we collectively decided it would be wise to avoid the additional demands of captaincy.”

Following Bumrah’s decision, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the new Test captain, with his leadership debut set for the much-anticipated five-Test series against England, starting in Leeds on Friday. The selection indicates a strategic move toward grooming young leadership for the long term.

During the media interaction, Bumrah emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership, especially in a lengthy series like this. “The BCCI was considering me for the role, but I had to decline. It’s not fair to the team if I can’t commit to every match. As a frontline bowler, my priority must remain on maintaining fitness and delivering consistently,” he added.
