Pradyut Bordoloi Joins BJP Ahead of Assam Polls
Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed him in New Delhi. Bordoloi resigned from Congress a day earlier, citing personal differences. He said he felt “insulted, sidelined, and suffocated” within the party. Despite his long association, he decided to join BJP to serve Assam better.
BJP Announces First Candidate List
On Thursday, BJP released the first list of 88 candidates for the Assam assembly elections. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from Jalukbari. Bordoloi will fight from Dispur. The party expects Bordoloi’s entry to strengthen its position in key constituencies. Moreover, Bordoloi emphasized that he wants to contribute to Assam’s development and welfare for all communities.
Bordoloi’s Message to Voters
Bordoloi explained that leaving Congress was a difficult decision. “I joined Congress at 16, and the party shaped my political journey. However, I felt marginalized in recent years,” he said. He added that BJP will allow him to better serve the people. Furthermore, he expressed eagerness to collaborate with his new colleagues to make Assam one of India’s leading states. His public appeal highlights a focus on governance and inclusive development.

Congress Reacts to Bordoloi’s Exit
Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi described Bordoloi’s resignation as unfortunate but acknowledged it was a personal choice. He said Congress had supported Bordoloi in previous elections and had also fielded his son, Prateek Bordoloi, from Margherita. Nevertheless, Gogoi expressed moral support for Prateek and indicated the party will respect his decisions. The response reflects Congress’s intent to maintain unity while navigating electoral challenges.
