LPG Shortage Concerns Rise Across India

India is witnessing rising concern over LPG availability. The ongoing West Asia conflict has disrupted global energy supply chains. As a result, fuel shipments slowed through the Strait of Hormuz. This route handles a large share of global energy trade. Consequently, cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune face pressure. Several restaurants and small eateries have raised concerns. In some cases, they may shut temporarily due to LPG shortages.

Government Steps In to Manage Demand

Meanwhile, the government has taken steps to control demand. It extended the LPG booking gap across regions. In rural areas, the gap now stands at 45 days. In urban areas, it has increased to 25 days. According to Hardeep Singh Puri, this move ensures fair supply. At the same time, domestic LPG production has risen by nearly 30% since early March. Therefore, authorities continue to prioritize households and essential services.

DME Technology Offers Long-Term Solution

At the same time, scientists are working on alternatives. Researchers at Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and National Chemical Laboratory have developed DME technology. This fuel is cleaner and more affordable than LPG. Moreover, Indian Oil Corporation supports the project. Talks are also underway with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. As a result, India may reduce its dependence on imports in the future.

Relief Measures and Strategic Coordination

However, the situation remains sensitive. Still, diplomatic efforts have brought some relief. Iran allowed Indian LPG carriers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This followed talks between Narendra Modi and Masoud Pezeshkian. Additionally, multiple ministries are monitoring the situation closely. New gas allocation rules are also in place. Therefore, the government aims to maintain stable supply despite global uncertainty.
