Aqua Titan Changes Course Toward India
A major shift in global oil trade has emerged as the Aframax tanker Aqua Titan, loaded with Russian crude, diverts from its original China-bound route and heads toward India. Ship-tracking data indicates the vessel is expected to arrive at the New Mangalore Port on March 21. Initially destined for China’s Rizhao Port, the tanker reversed course in Southeast Asian waters in mid-March, reflecting rapidly changing energy dynamics triggered by geopolitical tensions.
Strait of Hormuz Crisis Reshapes Oil Routes
The rerouting comes amid a deepening global energy crisis linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has significantly disrupted oil flows through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This narrow passage handles over 20% of global oil and LNG shipments, making any disruption a major concern for energy-importing nations. The United States has reportedly eased restrictions, allowing India to increase imports of Russian crude to stabilize supply amid reduced Middle Eastern exports.

India Accelerates Russian Oil Purchases
India has responded swiftly to the evolving crisis. Refiners have secured nearly 30 million barrels of Russian oil within a week, according to market estimates. Data from Vortexa Ltd. suggests that at least seven tankers have recently altered their routes from China to India, signaling a broader shift in global oil trade flows. Another vessel, the Suezmax tanker Zouzou N., carrying Kazakhstan’s CPC Blend crude, has also redirected its course toward India’s west coast, further reinforcing the trend.
Indian Vessels Navigate Tensions Safely
Despite rising tensions, India continues to maintain critical maritime operations in the region. Indian-flagged LPG carriers have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz, delivering essential energy supplies. The safe arrival of these vessels highlights India’s strategic efforts to secure energy resources while closely monitoring the volatile situation in the Persian Gulf. As the crisis unfolds, India’s growing role as a key destination for diverted global oil shipments underscores its importance in the evolving energy landscape.
