Varanasi, Jan 18, 2026: Uttar Pradesh Police have registered eight FIRs in Varanasi after AI-generated images and misleading claims related to the redevelopment of Manikarnika Ghat surfaced on social media. As a result, tensions rose quickly around one of Hinduism’s most sacred cremation sites. Consequently, authorities moved swiftly to contain misinformation and maintain public order.

Police Allege Misinformation and Intent to Hurt Sentiments

According to police officials, the FIRs name eight individuals and multiple X handles accused of spreading fabricated visuals. Moreover, Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Bansal said officers filed the cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He clarified that the images shared online were contrary to ground realities. Additionally, officials alleged that some visuals linked Manikarnika Ghat with Hindu deities in a misleading manner. Therefore, police believe the posts aimed to hurt religious sentiments, provoke anger, and disturb social harmony.

Opposition Amplifies Issue, Government Responds

Meanwhile, several opposition leaders raised the issue on social media. The Congress party’s official X handle shared a video featuring the disputed visuals. In addition, the party accused the government of erasing cultural heritage in the name of development. Similarly, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule expressed concern over alleged alterations at the ghat. Therefore, she urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene and ensure that development respects history and due process.

Yogi Adityanath Rejects Claims, Warns of Strict Action

However, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rejected the allegations and termed them “false propaganda.” Accordingly, he accused the Congress and its allies of deliberately misleading the public through AI-generated images. Furthermore, he said Kashi continues to witness unprecedented development under his government. Earlier, he noted, similar claims surfaced during the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project.
Finally, Adityanath said daily footfall has risen from 10,000–15,000 to nearly 1–1.5 lakh devotees. Overall, he stressed that redevelopment at Manikarnika Ghat is lawful and ongoing. Meanwhile, police confirmed that strict action will follow against anyone spreading misinformation online, after a contractor filed a formal complaint.
