Mamata Appeals to CJI at Jalpaiguri Event
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to protect citizens during the inauguration of a new building at the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Saturday. She said, “You are the guardian of our Constitution. Please protect the people.” Banerjee also called for safeguarding democracy, the judiciary, and the country’s heritage and geography from potential threats.

Banerjee made her remarks amid tensions with the BJP-led Union government, particularly over the alleged misuse of central probe agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED matter is currently under review in the Supreme Court, where the TMC government has faced scrutiny. Moreover, Banerjee frequently raised concerns about federal overreach and states’ rights, framing her plea as part of her broader political dispute with the Centre.

Banerjee stressed that citizens should not be wrongly targeted by “agencies.” She said, “These days, there is a trend of media trials before disposal of cases; this must stop.” She emphasized that the judiciary must protect people from political or administrative pressure. Furthermore, Banerjee highlighted the need for transparency and fairness in legal proceedings to maintain public trust in the system.
