CM Leads Devotional Rituals
Bhubaneswar, Jan 14, 2026: People across Odisha celebrated Makar Sankranti 2026 with traditional rituals and cultural activities. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Maji took a holy dip in the Baitarani river in his home district of Keonjhar. He also offered prayers at a Shiva temple. In addition, he posted on social media, “May this tradition strengthen unity and bring happiness to every family.”
Devotees Visit Temples and Beaches
At the same time, thousands visited the Jagannath Temple in Puri to witness special rituals. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were adorned in ‘Makar Chourashi Besha’. Devotees offered Makar Chaula, a sweet dish made of freshly harvested rice, jaggery, coconut, and bananas. Meanwhile, many people went to Chandrabhaga Beach and the Sun Temple in Konark to see the sunrise. These activities highlighted the spiritual significance of the festival.

Kite Flying and Rangoli Competitions
Furthermore, in southern Odisha, Telugu communities decorated their homes with rangoli and organized community feasts. Additionally, kite flying filled the skies with vibrant colors, as children and adults participated in friendly competitions. These events strengthened social bonds and showcased Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.
Leaders Extend Greetings
Finally, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati wished everyone joy and prosperity. Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik also extended greetings, stating, “May this festival of culture fill lives with happiness, peace, and prosperity.” Despite minor disputes at Bhubaneswar’s Lingaraj Temple, the celebrations continued smoothly. Overall, Makar Sankranti reflected Odisha’s devotion, unity, and festive spirit.
