BCB Raises Safety Concerns for Bangladesh T20 Matches

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to request the ICC to shift Bangladesh T20 matches from India to Sri Lanka. This comes after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. The BCCI issued the directive due to political tensions and recent incidents in Bangladesh. Therefore, the BCB feels that playing Bangladesh T20 matches in India could put players at risk.

Political Tensions Affect Bangladesh T20 Matches

Recent attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh have strained relations with India. Moreover, criticism targeted KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan over Rahman’s inclusion. This prompted the BCCI to ask for Rahman’s release. As a result, the BCB plans to write to the ICC, stressing safety concerns for Bangladesh T20 matches in Kolkata, where the team will play three opening games of the World Cup. Media Committee Chairman Amzad Hussain said, “We will write to the ICC regarding what has happened today.”

Sports Adviser Supports Moving Bangladesh T20 Matches

Bangladesh’s sports adviser, Asif Nazrul, urged the BCB to request a full relocation of Bangladesh T20 matches to Sri Lanka. He explained that if one Bangladeshi cricketer cannot safely play in India, the entire team may face dangers. In addition, Nazrul recommended halting IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh. Bangladesh will face the West Indies at Eden Gardens on February 7 for its first T20 match. Meanwhile, the BCB continues to prioritize player safety in all discussions about Bangladesh T20 matches.

KKR Confirms Rahman Release Amid Controversy

KKR confirmed Rahman’s release on Saturday under the BCCI’s directive. Consequently, the franchise will sign a replacement player under IPL rules. Rahman had joined KKR for INR 9.20 crore after a bidding contest with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. With tensions rising, Bangladesh is taking proactive steps to ensure both the safety of its players and the smooth conduct of Bangladesh T20 matches in the World Cup.
