Shock in Toronto: Two Indian Nationals Murdered

Toronto has witnessed two tragic murders of Indian nationals within just two weeks. Although police say the cases do not connect, these incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of international students and residents. In particular, one case involved the killing of a doctoral student, while the earlier case claimed the life of a young Indian woman, leaving the community deeply shaken.

Shivank Avasthi: Doctoral Student Shot Dead

The latest case involved Shivank Avasthi, a young doctoral student at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He died after attackers shot him near the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road, close to the campus. After receiving reports, police rushed to the scene and found Avasthi with gunshot wounds. Despite their swift efforts, officers could not save him. Meanwhile, the suspects fled, and authorities temporarily locked down the campus. Additionally, the Consulate General of India in Toronto is assisting the victim’s family. In a statement, the consulate expressed deep anguish over the tragic loss of the young student.

Himanshi Khurana: Murder Linked to Domestic Violence

Earlier, 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana, a Toronto-based digital creator, fell victim to murder. Police suspect intimate partner violence in her death. Officers responded to a missing person report on December 19 and found her body the next morning. Authorities issued a search warrant for 32-year-old Abdul Ghafoori, who knew the victim, and police continue to investigate the case actively.

Community Shock and Safety Concerns

These back-to-back murders have deeply shaken the Indian community in Toronto. Consequently, police urge anyone with information to come forward. Furthermore, the incidents highlight the vulnerability of international students and residents living away from home. Therefore, community vigilance and support remain crucial. Toronto authorities continue investigating both cases to bring justice to the victims and reassure the public.
