Mumbai created history with the opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), officially becoming India’s first true double-airport metropolis. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu congratulated Maharashtra and called the moment a major breakthrough for India’s aviation sector. He said the success reflects the synergy of the double-engine NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also noted that the new airport sets fresh benchmarks in efficiency, capacity, and passenger comfort, marking a new chapter in India’s infrastructure growth.
Strategic Location to Ease Air Traffic Pressure
NMIA is located in Navi Mumbai and is designed to meet the rising air traffic demand across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India. For decades, Mumbai relied on a single airport, which often struggled with congestion and delays. With NMIA now operational, the city can manage its traffic between two major airports, improving travel efficiency. This dual-airport system strengthens Mumbai’s position as a major aviation hub in Asia. Moreover, the new airport’s location supports regional development and ensures smoother operations for both domestic and international travelers.
Gautam Adani Calls the Opening a Moving Moment
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani shared heartfelt emotions after the airport welcomed passengers for the first time. Posting photos on X, he said it was a “deeply moving moment.” He honoured workers, farmers, social workers, and specially abled team members who contributed to the project. Many of them experienced their first flight that day, making the event even more memorable. Adani added that NMIA symbolizes the spirit of unity, dedication, and the dreams of countless people who helped bring the project to life.
Smooth Operations on Day One Mark a Strong Start
Developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd., NMIA is among India’s biggest greenfield airport projects. On its first day, the airport handled 48 flights to nine domestic destinations and served over 4,000 passengers. This smooth start reflects strong planning and readiness for high traffic. With modern infrastructure, advanced technology, and eco-friendly design, NMIA aims to improve the nation’s travel experience. As Mumbai steps into a new era with two world-class airports, the city is expected to benefit from faster connectivity, reduced congestion, and greater economic opportunities.
