A 20-year-old BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida was found dead in her hostel room on July 18, with police confirming it was a case of suicide by hanging. Her death sparked a major protest on campus, with her family and fellow students accusing university staff of mental harassment and negligence. According to the victim’s relatives, faculty members had falsely accused her of forging signatures, insulted her in class, and threatened to fail her, which they believe pushed her to take the extreme step.

The student’s mother, Sunita, began a sit-in protest on the university campus, refusing to leave until justice was served. She emotionally appealed for help from top leaders, saying she would not move until action was taken. During the protest, students and the victim’s family claimed they were lathi-charged by the police, adding to the tension. Many BDS students reportedly felt unsafe and wanted to return home.

Based on the family’s complaint, an FIR was registered, naming five staff members. Two individuals were taken into custody for questioning. Police said they have asked the university to take preventive steps to avoid such tragedies in the future. A meeting between the administration and the victim’s family was arranged as the protest continued. Authorities stated the situation is now under control, and further investigation is ongoing.
