Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a fatal car crash in northern Spain, just two weeks after marrying his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. According to reports from the Daily Mail, the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday on the A-52 near Cernadilla, Zamora, close to the Portuguese border. Jota was driving a Lamborghini with his younger brother, André Silva, 26, a professional footballer for FC Penafiel, when the vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking. The car veered off the road, rolled over, and burst into flames, killing both men on the spot.

Emergency responders from the Castilla y León region quickly arrived at the scene after receiving multiple distress calls about a burning vehicle at Km. 65 on the A-52. Local fire officials confirmed the vehicle had caught fire following the crash. In a statement, the regional emergency services noted that the Zamora Traffic Police, Provincial Fire Brigade, and a medical unit from the Mombuey Health Center were dispatched to the site, where they pronounced both occupants dead. The stretch of road where the incident occurred is commonly used by travelers heading from northern Portugal toward ports in Santander or Bilbao, or northeast toward France.

The tragedy comes just weeks after Jota tied the knot with his longtime partner on June 22 in Porto. The couple, who shared three children, had recently celebrated their union, with Jota referring to himself in his final Instagram post as “the luckiest man in the world” to be her husband. Tributes have begun pouring in from across the footballing world, mourning the sudden loss of one of Portugal’s brightest talents and a beloved figure at Liverpool FC.
