A Chinese television journalist, Lu Yuguang of Phoenix TV, was injured in a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Kursk region on Thursday, according to his employer. The state-affiliated broadcaster confirmed that Lu sustained a head injury while reporting near targeted facilities in the village of Korenevo, and was promptly hospitalized for treatment. In footage aired by Russian state media on Friday, Lu appeared with a white bandage over his head, speaking to reporters about the incident.

Russia’s foreign ministry condemned the attack, accusing Kyiv of deliberately targeting journalists, and called on the international community to respond. Beijing also expressed serious concern, with foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urging all parties to pursue a political solution to the Ukraine conflict and to work collectively to de-escalate tensions in the region.

While China has maintained a stance of neutrality in Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, Western nations argue that Beijing’s economic and diplomatic support has been critical to Moscow. This latest incident could further complicate China’s positioning as it attempts to balance strategic partnerships with broader calls for peace and conflict resolution.
